American 8/0 Croakie Hawaii's Secret Tuna Killer

Brand: American
This is one of our Secret Tuna Killers not everyone knows about.  This represents a Sea Worm.

Long long ago, we used Pink King Busters and Clark Spoons and were only catching Small Bonitos and Tunas.  There was this boat that was just catching fish like crazy, I happened to see what he was using and it was something similar to this.  There are the smaller ones and stiff ones but I have been catching a lot of Baby Tunas around our Buoys.  7/0 hooks are too small for my liking, sometimes the fish comes off.  I prefer 9/0s. it will hold Tunas from 5 pounds to 80 pounds (is the largest I have caught with this).  Some people prefer 8/0 and that is fine but I like a lot of hook in mine.

I put these on my baiting poles (80W with 50# Stubby poles and 100# line) directly to the main line.  I use the Trilene Knot.  There is a Site but ebay prohibits any links so you need look it up.  I go 4 times up and 4 times down, this is a 100% knot so the weak spot on the Main Line will go first.  Let it out about 100 feet and I do about 5 knots.  I have Swivel Shotguns so my crew jerks the whole pole holder and lets go when the fish is on.  I was actively on the water for 45 years before I hung up my poles, I started trolling in 1971.  In my opinion, there is a slight difference on how you jig the poles.  People normally jerk the pole forward 2 or 3 times then bring it back.  I instruct my crew to go forward all the way and hold.  Come back and hold then come back and hold then all the way back, hold then all the way forward again.  We rather have Tuna and this seems to work better.

I remember one trip when the water was like a lake with no wind and the fish were down.  All the birds were just sitting on the water.  Occasionally some birds will fly up then sit back down, this means the fish came up a little to take a look.  We tried everything.  Slow troll with heavy bullets and noting, we changed colors and still nothing.  I told my crew to change over to these Croakies.  We ran 2 lines doing 5 knots and just cruising through the sitting birds.  We had a hit, about a 50 pound Tuna, the fish put up a fight on 100# test.  We went from piles to piles and had another hit.  I swear this might have gone 100#.  It put up a fight and the line cut on my Trim Tab Blade.  I was Sick.  I told my crew to use 2 Full Size Poles which had 130s on it and 150# line.  We didn't let the fish get close until we were ready, we held the pole straight out and the reel man pulled the line down to the reel.  We ended up with 5 Tunas, 50 to 80 pounds that day.

I outsmarted my self once.  I tried this on a Pile of Birds on my Outrigger and troll at 8.5 knots or 10 miles per hour.  This Croakie spins and it twisted the line so bad I had to get new line and put that pole away.  I ran the Center Pole and 130 on it after that.

This is more for Local Fishermen.  The Small Black Bird which usually follow Bonito and eat small bait, they go up and down.  Now, the Medium Black and White (We call it Matolis), they go up and down if there is small bait or Bonitos, if there is Tuna or Ahi, they come down and swoop side to side then back up.   There is Tuna in that pile.  Sometimes the Bonito and Tuna run together and they run, watch which birds are following the Tuna.  I follow ledges (500 fathom, 1000 fathom etc) the Medium Gray Birds follow ledges usually in a straight line going one way, if you see them going back or side, basically just looking in one area, take a couple spins in that area and check it out.  Once on the 1500 fathom ledge outside of BO at Barbers, I turned left to the HH Pinnacle.  I saw this and made a couple spins and took a double Tuna.  After that they were gone and nobody caught any Tunas that day.
