The calf wrap also called calf bandage, leg bandage; leg wrap or wrap gaiter has been worn since the Iron Age. The Romans on Hadrian's Wall used it, as did the Germans, Byzantines, Franks, Alamanns, Bajuwaren, Wenden (Slavs), later in the Middle Ages then the Normans and Vikings. The calf wrap was common throughout Central and Northern Europe.
The calf wrap served as a sock replacement at the beginning. From foot to lower leg, they are wrapped over trousers to below the knee and fixed with a fibula to protect and warm the wearer.
Based on textile finds in Damendorf, Oberaltendorf, Bernuthsfeld and the Thorsberg Moor, the wearing can be proven from the 2nd to the 8th century and also on the Bayeux carpet from 1066 are shown calf wraps.
Our Aki calf wrap remains in this tradition and is made of wool with the dimensions 380 cm x 10 cm. Of course, we supply two calf wraps, socks are not purchased individually.
