MINERAL DESCRIPTION This Copal Amber is from Cap D'Ambre, Madagascar and dates to the Pleistocene geological epoch which lasted from about to 11,700 to 2,588,000 years ago. Copal Amber is a name given to tree resin from the copal tree Protium copal (Burseraceae) that is particularly identified with the aromatic resins used by the cultures of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica as ceremonially burned incense and other purposes. Copal Amber is also found in East Africa. By the 18th century, Europeans found it to be a valuable ingredient in making a good wood varnish. It became widely used in the manufacture of furniture and carriages. Copal is not the fossilized, hardened tree resin that is known as Baltic Amber. Baltic amber is fossilized copal, which is found one or two meters below living copal trees from roots of trees that may have lived thousands of years earlier. The Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of amberand dates from 44 million years ago. Today, more than 90% of the world's amber comes from Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia. It is a major source of income for the region.
