This tool is your new best friend if you change eyes or restore dolls. It's shorter than a standard pen or pencil, about the width of a knitting needle, completely safe not to scratch your doll or vinyl, and strong enough to not bend on any tough job. We use it not just for changing and adjusting eyes, but also for loosening neck strings, prying off zip ties, getting into tiny corners and areas, and prying off wigs.
Uses we commonly use this tool for:
1. Changing out eyes. If you've done this process you know you are working with heat and force and getting those eyes out quick and popping new ones in can be a challenge. This tool helps pry eyes out. The smaller end can go into the corners of the eye sockets with ease and help pry out the eye. The larger end "scoop" side also can be helpful in digging behind and eye and prying it out. Once the old eyes are out and you've put new eyes in, the small side of this tool is excellent for adjusting the eye in the socket by using the smaller side to press down on the metal casing (blinking eyes) to rock the eye forward or back, up or down, to get the eye in the ideal spot to be centered. On stationary eyes it's the same process but you are pushing down and using the tool on the eye itself at each of the corners or sometimes digging underneath to get the ideal placement. The best part of this tool is that it does not bend, it is incredibly strong so when you need that tremendous force to pop eyes out or press down in the sockets, this tool has the strength to take that force. It's tips are rounded so you can feel comfortable pressing down and prying out without fear of scratching or tearing your vinyl or scratching your eyes.
2. Removing Wigs. We even use this tool to remove old wigs instead of the "use a kitchen spoon" method. We enjoy using this tool more, because the smaller side can open a pocket in the wig's glued edge, and then you can use the larger side to pry up the edges. Because this tool does not bend you can safely pry up all the edges without fear of bending your tool. Because the areas of the tool are narrower than a spoon, it can get under those hair weft edges a lot easier and faster than using other tools and it's safe to not scratch your doll's head.
3. Neck strings and Zip ties. If that wasn't enough, we also use the small side of this tool to loosen knots on doll neck strings (if applicable) as the smaller end can pry up a knot that has been tied tight by digging the smaller side in between the two knots (on a square knot) and prying at them until they loosen. On dolls that have a zip tie at the neck, we use this tool to pry up the zip tie enough away from the neck so that we can cut it (for neck string adding or to remove the head for face ups or cleaning and apply a new zip tie).
This tool is now a permanent part of our restoration tools and is used in some way shape or form for every doll that goes through our doll hospital. We find it invaluable and doing a multitude of tasks on dolls and the endurance to last through many repair jobs. We actually keep 2 on our work areas because inevitably they are used so often that if one gets temporarily misplaced there is a spare back-up because once you use it, you won't want to go back to screw drivers, spoons, and manicure tools (often recommended for working with dolls by others).
