50 Oregon Lamination letter size 9 x 11.5-inch laminating pouches are typically used for standard 8.5 x 11-inch sheets, flash cards, signs, POP displays, menus and much more. These thermal lamination pockets are 10 mil thick on each flap for maximum strength, rigidity and protection. The adhesive becomes clear when heat activated.

Example: When laminating 100# lb cover stock paper with 10 mil pouches, the result will be approximately 30 mil thick and similar to a standard credit card.

Some pouch laminators cannot seal more than 5 mil pouches (10 mil total pouch thickness). A rule of thumb is laminators with either variable speed or adjustable temperature are likely to seal these thicker pouches.

Note: Industry standard specification for 10 mil laminating pouches is 10 mil on each flap for a total of 20 mil added to your paper sheet. Also, 1 mil equals 1/1000th of an inch (or 25 microns metric). The industry calls these pouches, yet they are sealed on only one edge instead of three (like a file folder).

Best Laminating Carriers

LAMINATING CARRIERS:

Lamination carriers consist of single folded card stock slightly larger than your laminating pouch and have silicone coating treatment inside to prevent pouches from sticking to it. If not heated too highly, good quality carriers are reusable for numerous pouch laminations.

  • Many of today’s pouch laminators have silicone rubber rollers that do not require the use of laminating carriers; however, we do recommend the use of carriers to extend the life of the rollers in your machine and improve lamination results.
  • Here’s why: During the lamination process, all laminating pouches generate a small amount of adhesive squeeze out past the edge of the pouch which can accumulate on your machine’s rollers. That excess adhesive dries, cracks and eventually ruins the laminator rollers. Carriers protect the rollers from excess adhesive and extend the life of your laminator.
  • Also, This adhesive will likely show as very thin lines on additional pouches run through afterward. It can be removed with rubbing alcohol; however, using a carrier catches that excess adhesive without leaving traces on your next pouch.
  • And, Carriers protect the exterior of your pouch from scratching during the laminating process, which may occur when running through the cooling plates at the back of your laminator (if equipped).

Note: Using carriers requires a bit more heat or less speed to seal laminating pouches. If your laminator does not have a speed or temperature adjustment, carriers may prevent your pouches from sealing completely or require multiple passes through the laminator.

LAMINATING TIPS:

  • For customers with adjustable temperature laminators who are trying a new brand, we recommend lowering the temperature approximately 25 degrees F for the first sheet or two. Users can always re-run laminate that was not run hot enough and seems foggy, but you cannot fix blister bubbles caused by running too hot the first time.
  • Laminators with speed control can achieve a cooler result by trying a faster speed at first. Then, slow the speed as necessary to achieve perfect laminating results. Generally, setting the perfect temperature and speed will be done just once for each thickness of laminating pouch; however, temperature requirements may also be affected by large dark solid colors which draw more heat.
  • Sheets should not be laminated until at least 24 hours after being printed. This is especially true for laser and digital output. Allowing printed sheets to be open to air overnight in stacks no thicker than 1/4-inch for extended time before laminating will increase adhesive grip.
  • Customers who plan to trim sheets after laminating (flush or multiple cards per pouch) should wait at least 24 hours to allow adhesive to cure. Curing will produce a cleaner and more professional cut.
  • Industry standard specification for 10 mil laminating pouches is 10 mil on each flap for a total of 20 mils added to your paper and 1 mil equals 1/1000th of an inch and 25 microns metric.
  • The lamination industry calls these laminating pouches yet they are sealed on only one edge, like a file folder.
