The market saw a huge uptick in the usage of Exhuast Gas Temperature Sensors (EGTS) on trucks and other diesel vehicles in 2007, with the shift in EPA laws requiring OEM’s to reduce greenhouse gas levels in diesel exhaust gas. Most aftertreatment systems now contain a handful of these sensors. These EGTS sensors are critical in aiding the aftertreatment system in reducing harmful Nitrogen Oxide levels during operation to meet EPA standards. These EGTS sensors live in one of the most volatile environments a sensor can live in.
EGTS sensors are exposed to extremely high exhaust gas temps, soot, diesel fuel being sprayed for DPF regen, urea and all the harsh gasses from the combustion process. When these sensors aren’t functioning properly, your SCR system isn’t functioning properly. That can means significantly poorer fuel mileage, increased/prolonged regens, and increased stress on the emissions system – which can lead to fatigue and failures of other components in the system. The most common reason for replacement comes from extreme fluctuation between hot and cold in manifolds, DPFs, and exhaust ducting where these sensors are mounted. This constant thermal cycling causes these sensors to seize up in their respective locations, leading to brittleness and breakage during routine maintenance and system service, etc.
