The Altai Mountains are a geographically diverse area in Central Asia, where China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Siberia meet. It is even suspected that skiing originated in the Altai Mountains, but this is still controversial. The name of the mountain is derived from the Turkish-Mongolian word "altan", meaning "golden" and is an apt description for all the natural treasures found there - including the Siberian yellow clay. Thus, over the centuries, these mountains have hosted many ethnic groups who have made their livelihoods with agriculture, livestock, hunting, forestry and mining.
