**This Replacement Bearing Kit only fits the genuine SOG Kiku XR LTE folding knife. the Bearings will also fit the standard Kiku XR, but the washers don't fit. This kit also does not fit the Kiku Assisted knife or any other genuine or knock-off SOG folding knives.
If you've ever taken you SOG Kiku XR LTE apart for cleaning, you can easily see how it works. There are 2 thrust bearings that reside in the blade machined into each side of the blade and there's 2 steel washers held in cups formed into the carbon fiber liners. This leaves the bearings to ride between the blade and the steel washers. *It should be noted that while carbon fiber is strong and light weight, it does not make for a good bearing surface for the ball bearings to ride against. This is why there are 2 steel washers needed in the CF liners. Unfortunately, this is where SOG skimped, as the factory washers are soft and not smooth and are of low quality. This invites dirt to damage them easily.
This kit includes:
Qty. 2 high quality replacement 9-ball stainless steel bearings in a copper cage which are the exact same quality and dimensions as the ones that came with your Kiku XR LTE.
Qty. 2 hardened T-304 Stainless Steel washers for the ball bearings to ride on. These are MUCH harder than the factory ordinary steel washers and are virtually rust proof. With proper care and adjustment, this upgrade kit should make your blade deploy smooth for the life of the knife.
Qty. 1 6000 Grit Polishing Pad. Before installation, use this small Polishing Pad to polish your new washers, blade cups and the bar lock ramp on the blade. WARNING... DO NOT use on the Polishing Pad on the ball bearings, blade's edge or on the blade's face as it will harm the satan or black finish and look like poo.
This bearing replacement kit will allow you to increase performance of your Kiku's blade action. These kits are in limited supply and are VERY difficult to offer on a consistent basis. GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!
While it's pretty easy to replace the bearings and washers in your awesome SOG Kiku XR LTE, some mechanical knowledge is advised. There are no instructions included with this kit as it is assumed you know what you are doing. After all, basic maintenance is required to any knife you own. Disassembly and assembly are a part of responsible ownership, so why not reassemble your Kiku with upgraded parts? If you are nervous about taking your knife apart, we highly suggest videoing your disassembly for reference. Again, it's best to have at least some mechanical understanding of the Kiku and its bar lock system. We have a Kiku XR LTE video (see link above) on YT that outlines the basic steps of bearing replacement on the Kiku XR LTE. These steps are not difficult, but may require some finagling to get the pivot through the body of the knife the first few times you do it. You'll quickly become a pro! BELOW ARE SOME TIPS AND GENERAL SUGGESTIONS TO PRINT OUT TO HELP GUIDE YOU.
TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS. Wash hands well before handling bearings and races and have cleaning swabs, paper towel and a flashlight ready. Consider putting some electrical tape or some other type of temporary protective cover over the knife edge for safety while doing the installation. BE MORE THAN CAREFUL! We cannot and will not be responsible for any damages to your knife, property and/or person... period. Work slow, work smart!
It is only necessary to loosen and remove just the pivot from the knife. All other screws DO NOT need to be loosened or removed from the knife body just to do this bearing / washer swap. BE CAREFUL NOT TO STRIP THE SCREW HEADS. You should use a quality T8 Torx wrench which should be fully inserted into the pivot screw to keep from stripping it. Upon reassembly, the use of medium liquid thread lock is suggested, but is not essential if you do regular knife maintenance / inspection.
THE POLISH PAD...
For the smoothest deployment of your blade, while the knife is apart, use the supplied 6000 grit Polishing Pad to smooth the new washers and the tang ramp where the bar lock touches the blade tang as seen in the last pic. You can also polish the blade cups and knife liners where the bearings physically touch it as well as on the pivot. This will make deploying your Kiku blade as smooth as glass. The pad can be washed with soap & water and reused many times. WARNING... DO NOT use the polishing pad on the ball bearings themselves or the blade face or its cutting edge and remember to wipe clean and lube afterwords anything you polish with it.
ABOUT THE PIVOT...
The Kiku uses a D-shaped "capture" pivot which keeps it from spinning when the blade is deployed and retracted. This D shape keeps the pivot screw from self-loosening. Due to its shape, the pivot MUST be correctly oriented thru the D-hole in both scales and carbon fiber frame). It's a good idea to note the pivot's exact orientation and what side of the knife you've removed it from.
Removing, orienting and reinserting the pivot will probably take some finagling the first time you do it. Don't get frustrated and don't use excessive force or tools! It gets easier, especially if you lube the pivot before reinstalling and OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE is to remember to pull back on the XR lock during the pivot removal and reinstallation. Watch the video!
Prior to reassembly, remember to pre-lube the blade cups, bearings and washer with your lube of choice. Also, lube the pivot and bearings a second time once the knife is fully reassembled. Wipe off any excess lube after it dries.
After installation, if your blade needs centering, loosen the pivot adjuster screw and all scale screws using a Torx T6 & T8 wrench and center the blade with appropriate centering shims (try using a couple of business cards as shims) while retightening all the screws, then remove the shims. If blade center is still way off, consider you may have installed the pivot on the wrong side.
We suggest keeping your Kiku's bearings and pivot clean and lubed. Some owners prefer to not lube their knives sighting the lube attracts dirt.
NEVER over tighten the pivot adjuster screw regardless of bearing / washer type. While these bearings are very hard, damage could occur (like with any bearing) if you were to over tighten the pivot screw. You must "dial-in" the correct amount of pivot tension using a T8 wrench. Test the knife in hot and cold.
The Stainless Steel thrust bearings in this kit are the same dimensions as the bearings that came with your Kiku XR LTE. If the bearing becomes dirty, wet with dirty or salty water or is subjected to any type of chemical solvents, a cleaning and light reapplication of PTFE lubricant like Tri-Flow® is highly suggested. Dirt build-up should be blown out from the pivot area every so often as you should with any folder, especially if it has roller bearings of any kind.
