- DESCRIPTION: The Sunny Sunflower Seed Mix is a must-have annual mix for anyone who loves the iconic, bold beauty of sunflowers. The mix features a 10 all-time favorite sunflower varieties in multiple hues and sizes: Maximilian, Ox-Eye, Autumn Beauty, Lemon Queen, Giant Grey Stripe and more. Suitable for all regions of North America, this seed is hard working and will produce a gorgeous display of stunning summer blooms without needing much attention or time.
- RESULTS: You can expect to receive 100% Non-GMO seeds with zero fillers. Once you’ve prepared your soil and sowed the seed, Mother Nature will guide the way. The blooms are shades of bright gold, pale yellow, orange, rust and red with lush foliage on tall stems. Sunflowers are pollinator attractors and will bring bees, butterflies and hummingbirds to your landscape. They can last up to 12 days as cut flowers and make the most wonderful gifts.
- PLANTING: The Sunny Sunflower Seed Mix is suitable for all zones. Experienced gardeners love the dependable majesty of color in their gardens and meadows, while children love how easy they are to plant and how unusually huge they can grow. Some even produce stems as tall as 10 or 12 feet with saucer-like blooms as large as a foot in diameter. It is recommended to sow your sunflower seeds directly into your garden rather than start them in starter pots.
- PLANTING: Scatter sunflower seeds outdoors after there is no longer a danger for frost and both day and nighttime temperatures reach 55F. Sunflowers grow best in full-sun, receiving at least 6 to 8 hours of full exposure per day. Sunflowers appreciate loose, well-draining soil. Many seeds need sun to germinate, but this is not the case with sunflowers, which should be pressed 1 inch deep into the soil. If left on the surface, birds will likely eat them. Water well after planting.
- WHAT TO EXPECT: A quarter-pound sack should cover between 250 to 500 square feet. With blooms appearing in spring, summer and/or fall, this mix is extremely hardy and has a high germination rate. You can add a general purpose fertilizer once or twice a season. If a plant grows very tall and is not planted in a wind protected area, it may require staking.
- CARE: To prevent reseeding, remove spent sunflower heads before they go to seed. If you want to collect seeds for planting or keep as wildlife food, leave the flowers on the plant. Regular deadheading results in healthy, robust sunflower plants. At the end of the season after sunflowers have faded, simply pull up the plant and its roots, knocking off any loose dirt.
