HOW IT WORKS Training with occlusion bands has become a huge fitness phenomenon in recent years. The 2 primary focuses associated with this type of training have become: 1. Increase muscle mass and building strength. 2. Recovery after surgery / severe injury. All research shows that we need to induce either enough mechanical or metabolic stimulation to gain muscle. The previous thinking was that you need to work with heavy loads (between 60-80% of 1RM) to achieve this hypertrophy. However, with occlusion bands, the same hypertrophy can be achieved with lighter loads (between 30-50% of 1RM) and work until failure. This is due to the metabolic load placed on the muscle during blood flow limitation. Muscle Mass: By using Urban Lifters occlusion bands, we have occluded a proportion of the arterial inflow to the muscle while keeping venous outflow away from the muscle. This decreased oxygen supply creates a perfect anaerobic environment and creates metabolic loads that correspond to lifting very heavy loads. The result is increased muscle mass and a crazy pump on the working muscles. Recovery: blood flow restricted training is considered an extremely effective tool before surgery, immediately after surgery and during the stages of rehab. This also applies to the phases associated with injuries. During these phases, strengthening and building muscles is crucial, but injuries often make this extremely difficult as the stresses are required to produce mechanical/metabolic stimuli. As we have proved, using these bands can generate the necessary level of hypertrophy to experience muscle gain with only 20-50% of the 1RM load.
